Windy
| Looks like | Animated full-bleed weather map with Windy logo |
|---|---|
| Data shown | Live weather (wind, rain, temperature) for a location |
| Source | windy.com → menu → Embed widget on page (iframe from embed.windy.com) |
| Who embeds | Surf, sailing and paragliding sites, local news |
| How it makes money | Free embed must show the Windy logo and link (free ads) → users go to Windy app (Premium); commercial use needs the paid API |
| Company status | Alive, private, widely used weather app (size unverified) |
| My comments | Need to look very fancy. |
Treedom
| Looks like | "Our forest" map with counters (trees, CO2) and tree cards |
|---|---|
| Data shown | A company's planted trees on a map, CO2 absorbed, projects, gift codes |
| Source | Treedom iframe generator (no login, no domain lock) |
| Who embeds | Companies that paid to plant trees, on their own site |
| How it makes money | Company already paid for the trees; the embed is a free extra that advertises Treedom to the company's visitors |
| Company status | Italian B Corp; ~€9.5M revenue (2020, stale); 8,000–12,000 business clients |
| My comments | An embedded map should center on one topic. Yours can already be narrowed to one country. If you want to sell to local governments, you could let maps be built around cities, but the data points might get too sparse. That’s why I suggest centering your maps on events, or considering badge widgets. |
Walk Score
| Looks like | Score tile (0–100) on top, neighborhood map below |
|---|---|
| Data shown | Walk / transit / bike score plus nearby amenities map for an address |
| Source | Walk Score widget (free key by email). Code below copied from their example page |
| Who embeds | Real estate sites, one widget per listing; ~30,000 partner sites |
| How it makes money | Paid API for large sites; becoming the industry standard → acquired by Redfin (~$14.3M, 2014) |
| Company status | Acquired; still running under Redfin |
| My comments | A widget doesn’t have to be a map. Maybe people just want to show off how eco-friendly they are, with one number like this score. |
